I came for the bukakke; I stayed for the okame.

Decor: Typical Japanese decor. Cramped seating.
Service: Pleasant.
Food: They didn't techincally have bukakke on the menu, so I got the okame "rosy cheek" which was delicious and filling.
Overall: Good food, service, and atmostphere.

H2O

215 West Main St.
Smithtown, NY 11787
631-361-6464

We went here for Mother's Day dinner with Snowman's parents.

Decor: White wainscotted walls and comfy booths.
Service: Pleasant, although not completely informed.
Food: Delicious salmon sashimi and stone crab claws. Other sushi and my main entree of seafood pot pie was fine, but not stellar.
Overall: Too far away to be a regular experience, but fine for one night.

Oscar's at the Waldorf Astoria

I generally dig hotel bars and restaurants.

Decor: Kind of lame considering it's the Waldorf. It looked like the inside of a Denny's.
Service: Friendly and pleasant.
Food: Good. I had a vegetarian Mexican salad with black beans and avocado.
Overall: A bit pricey for what it is, but not bad either.

Ma Po Tofu

This recipe comes from Cooking Light. I've made it before and it's really simple and really, really good. The sauce is particularly delicious.

Makes 4 servings

1 pound firm tofu cut to 6 slices
1/2 cup chicken broth
1 tablespoon cornstarch
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon oyster sauce
1-2 teaspoons chili garlic sauce
4 ounces lean ground pork (4 oz. seems stingy; I go for the whole pound!)
1 tablespoon fresh grate ginger
3 cloves garlic mince
2 cups cooked rice (for 3 people, I had about 4 cups cooked or 1 1/2 raw)
1/3 cup chop green onions

Place tofu slices on several layers of paper towels; cover with additional paper towels. Place a dinner plate on top of covered tofu, let stand 30 minutes. Remove plate, discard paper towels. Cut tofu slices into 1/2-inch cubes. (I switched the paper towels every 10 minutes or so because they got soggy very quickly.)

Combine broth, cornstarch, soy sauce, oyster sauce, and chili garlic sauce, stirring with a whisk. (I actually felt like this did not make enough sauce...maybe because I added so much more pork. The next time I make this, I'm going to double the sauce ingredients to make more.)

Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add pork, cook 4 minutes or until done, stirring to crumble. Add ginger and garlic,- cook 1 minute, stirring constantly. Add tofu, cook 4 minutes or until golden, stirring frequently. Add broth mixture to pan. Bring to a boil, cook 1 minute or until mixture thickens. Remove from heat.

Serve tofu mixture over rice. Sprinkle with onions.

Lemon Sugar Cookies

This recipe came with a box of spices I got for my birthday from Penzeys. I've never used dehydrated lemon peel before. I actually couldn't really taste the lemon peel, but a friend ate one and immediately said, "Is there lemon in this?" so I guess it is noticeable. I thought they were a little bland so I drizzled them with chcolate.

To rehydrate lemon peel, add 3 parts water to 1 part peel and let stand 15 minutes. 1 tbsp. of minced lemon peel is equal to the zest of one medium lemon.

1 tsp. lemon peel
2 ¼ cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 cup butter
1 cup granulated sugar
½ cup light brown sugar (I totally forgot to add this...and it still came out fine, if not a little cakier than it would have had I added it)
2 eggs
2 tbsp. vanilla extract

Rehydrate lemon peel in 1 tbsp. of water. Sift flouer with baking soda and salt. Cream butter and sugar in bowl. Add eggs, lemon peel and vanilla. Mix well. Add flour mixture to butter mixture in two parts and mix well. Drop tsp. size amounts on nonstick cookie sheets (I use silpats), sprinkle with sugar (I used a small ice cream scoop to make uniform balls and rolled them in sugar, which made the bottoms a beautiful brown color) and bake in preheated 375° oven just until edges are light brown (about 11 minutes). Remove from oven and let set for 2 minutes. Place on cooling rack.

To drizzle with chocolate, melt milk chocolate in a double boiler until smooth (I probably used about 16 oz of chocolate). Place into squirt bottle and drizzle in zig zag patterns over cookies (I put a sheet of wax paper underneath the cooling racks to catch the drips).

Hooters

211 West 56th Street (bxn 7th/BWAY)
New York, NY 10019

I've been trying to corral various co-workers into eating here. After many failed attempts, it finally reached fruition.

Decor: Who cares? Boobs. That's what this place is about!
Service: Boobs. That's what this place is about!
Food: Pretty good. I had the buffalo chicken sandwich and I really liked it. The iced tea was instant lemon tea, which I actually also liked.
Overall: Boobs. That's what this place is about!
